Chelsea complete the signing of Romeo Lavia

Chelsea beat off competition from Liverpool, for the second time in the transfer market this season. Following the successful signing of Moises Caicedo from Brighton, the Blues submitted a bid for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia which was gleefully accepted on Friday.

As per the sources Chelsea will pay an initial sum of  £53 million ($67.5m) with an additional  £5m ($6.4m) in performance-related add-ons.

The deal takes Chelsea’s summer spending to a touch over the £300m mark, £115m of which was used for Moises Caicedo’s move to the South London club.

"I'm really happy to join Chelsea and be a part of this exciting project. It's an amazing football club with a great history and I'm really excited to get started," Lavia said in a statement.

"I can't wait to meet all my new teammates and build a chemistry together to achieve great things together."

As with Caicedo, Chelsea outran Liverpool in the race to sign Lavia from ‘The Saints’

Previously Liverpool had presented a £60m offer for Lavia accepted by Southampton but the player wanted to join the Blues, allowing them to negotiate a somewhat lower fee.

The 19 year old moved to Southampton from Man City last summer, playing 29 PL games and constantly impressed in  a unit that was relegated to the championship. He also made his Belgium debut against Germany in a Friendly in March.

Southampton paid an initial £10.5m but are yet to make 20% sell on fee to City after agreeing terms with Pochettino’s Chelsea.
