Why did Messi Unfollow Garnacho?

Now, Garnacho has reportedly been unfollowed by Lionel Messi on Instagram because he idolizes the 38-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo more. Last Sunday (26/11/2023), the 19-year-old Argentine Garnacho opened his goal account this season in a special way. The Argentinian star found the Everton goal with a fantastic overhead shot.

Garnacho's goal also opened up Manchester United's 3-0 victory at home to Everton, as well as bringing them closer to competition at the top of the standings. After scoring this beautiful goal, Garnacho celebrated with Cristiano Ronaldo's typical style, 'Siuuu'. He is indeed a big fan of CR7. Not only that, Garnacho has always been known to imitate Ronaldo's style, including wearing Nike Mercurial Superfly shoes, which are Ronaldo's favourite shoes.

This fact is quite interesting if you look at the fact that Garnacho is a teammate of Ronaldo's rival, the 36-year-old Argentine World Cup winner Messi's Argentine national team. Last year, rumours emerged that Messi unfollowed Garnacho on Instagram because he uploaded a photo of Ronaldo. Now, Man Utd Legend Rio Ferdinand claims Garnacho told him that he was hated by Messi because he idolized Ronaldo more. This claim was made by Ferdinand when speaking on his podcast.

“You know what I love about him? He doesn't care," said Ferdinand. "Garnacho told me that Messi unfollowed him (on Instagram) only because he made no secret of his preference for Ronaldo." Alejandro Garnacho's brother, Roberto Garnacho, also firmly denied Ferdinand's claims. Roberto explained that Messi had never followed Garnacho on Instagram. “Fake, Messi never follows it, stop making things up just to create hatred, Garnacho loves and admires both of them and you all try to create competition," wrote Roberto on his personal X account.
