Jasprit Bumrah Set To Undergo Back Surgery In New Zealand

Team India and Mumbai franchise speedster Jasprit Bumrah will be missing the Indian T20 League 2023 which will begin on March 31. Bumrah has been knocked out of action since the Asian Championship 2022 last year and India’s set masterpiece will now undergo back injury to ensure that he gets fit before the ODI World Championship which is scheduled later this year. 

The National Cricket Academy and the Indian Apex Council for cricket have specified a surgeon from New Zealand. The same doctor also treated Bumrah's franchise league teammate Jofra Archer from England. The surgery would be performed as soon as possible according to reports. 

It is estimated that Bumrah’s recovery would take a time between 20 to 24 weeks. “The immediate implication is that he could be out of action till September, missing the Indian T20 League and the final of the Test World Championship in London, should India qualify, in the process. Bumrah has been out of action for the last five months,” the report phrased.

Bumrah will definitely take a long break from cricket and is dubious for the Asian Championship in August-September. “The current priority of the BCCI management is to get him ready for the World Cup in October-November,” the report stated.

The reports also said, surgeon Rowan Schouten, who is from Christchurch, will operate on Bumrah. The specialist had worked with Grahame Inglis a renowned surgeon in the domain of orthopaedics. Previously Inglis operated upon a few other New Zealand players including Shane Bond who is presently the bowling coach of the Mumbai franchise. 

Schouten is popular in sporting circles and is believed to be the best of all, knowing how to conduct the procedure. He assisted Inglis in the surgery of James Pattinson, the Australian pacer. He also operated on Ben Dwarshuis and Jason Behrendorff who was also toiled with back injury apart from Archer.

The five times champions Mumbai will miss the likes of Bumrah as they were hoping to pair him with the English speedster Jofra Archer who is now fit to participate in the Indian T20 League 2023 after missing the whole tour ament last season. Bumrah has 145 wickets in 120 matches at an average of just 23.3 and is one of the best bowlers in the Indian T20 League history.
