Match 23: MCFC vs. JFC

Preview

After stumbling against Hyderabad, the defending champions have made a strong comeback and are now at the top of the table. Jamshedpur, on the other hand, defeated Mohun Bagan in the last fixture and that proves how clinical they have been this season.

On paper, Mumbai is way ahead of Jamshedpur. The likes of Igor Angulo, Mourtada fala, Bipin Singh and others are in brilliant form. After defeating Kolkata and Bengaluru in their last two matches, the side now looks set and will be gunning for all three points against the red miners. However, Coach Des Buckingham might just give rest to some of his players because of the tight schedule. Mumbai are well placed in the league and their backup players are as good as anybody. Even though the chances are low and there’s no injury concern, rotation can play a role in the match.

After a very successful season with Sergio Lobera, MCFC has appointed Buckingham as the new head coach of the team. Des has spent a very little time in the Indian subcontinent but has already impressed everyone. In the pre match press conference when he was asked about his assessment so far, he said, “It’s a good start. For me it was about making a good start which we did against Goa and then it’s about trying to get better in every game and I think we have started to show real signs of doing that right from game one to game four and it’s going to be so important we do that in the next game”.

Buckingham also said that it will be a pleasure for him to share the touchline with the legendary Owen Coyle. “They have got a hugely experienced manager in Owen Coyle and the career that Owen Coyle has had, if I can have half of that in my coaching career, I would be extremely proud. It’s going to be an absolute pleasure to share the touchline with him”, he said.

Coyle has done a fantastic job for the red miners so far. They are currently second in the league table and the kind of football they are playing; expect them to qualify for the semi-finals for the first time in their history. Greg Stuart has been brilliant for the team so far. In fact, all their foreign players have done their job. Eli Sabia and Peter Hartley will be the heart of the defense as it won’t be easy for them to stop Mumbai, who are scoring goals for fun this season.

Before facing a stiff challenge, Coach Owen Coyle addressed how difficult it is to play two matches against two of the finalists of last season in a matter of 3 days. “It's a difficult challenge because obviously the recovery time is minimal and obviously we found out prior to the ATK Mohun Bagan game, that they had more recovery than us. And obviously it's the same with Mumbai, who again, are a fantastic side, so we needed more days of recovery time”.

The coach also addressed how and why he has been changing his defensive pair in every match. “Well, obviously the challenge we have as head coaches this year, as you know, from the group of foreigners, we can only start with four. I have to be fair to all the players as well, they are all fantastic players. The six of them could play in any team. So of course, you have to look at the opposition and need to be much stronger in different areas, and that's how we'll look at that. But we look to make sure that all are fresh. It wasn't easy to leave out Alex Lima last game, although a bit of rest was needed because he had played all the matches”, he said.

Mumbai will of course be the favourites to win the match. It’s going to be a contest between Jamshedpur's defense and Mumbai’s attack. If countered well, the red miners can get the goal but that looks very unlikely.
