Tottenham Hotspur appoint Ange Postecoglou as their head coach
Tottenham Hotspur has officially announced Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach, signing him on a four-year contract. Starting his tenure on July 1, Postecoglou will become the first Australian to manage a Premier League team.
Chairman Daniel Levy expressed his excitement, stating that Postecoglou brings a positive mentality, a fast and attacking style of play, and a proven ability to develop players. The club sees his appointment as crucial for their future, particularly in strengthening the link between the academy and the senior team.
Talks between Tottenham and Celtic progressed swiftly after Postecoglou expressed his desire to manage in England. Initially, it was expected that he would sign a shorter contract, but the decision to commit to a four-year deal highlights the determination of both parties to succeed. This appointment comes after a 72-day search for Antonio Conte's successor, during which interim coaches Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason took charge temporarily.
Although Ryan Mason had shown interest in the permanent role, Tottenham focused their search externally and engaged in discussions with various candidates, including Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, and Arne Slot. However, Nagelsmann was quickly ruled out, while Enrique and Slot both declined Tottenham's approach. Feyenoord's rejection came just days after their general manager, Dennis te Kloese, rejected an offer to become Tottenham's sporting director.
Subsequently, Tottenham turned their attention to Postecoglou, who recently led Celtic to a domestic treble with their Scottish Cup Final victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle. During his time at Celtic, Postecoglou has won five of the six trophies available, showcasing his success and capabilities.
Postecoglou, born in Greece but raised in Australia, previously managed the Australian national team for four years. At Celtic, he was on a rolling 12-onth contract, allowing him to join Tottenham without any compensation owed to Celtic.
