Preview 

Chennai (CHE) enter the final stages of the ongoing edition of the Indian T20 League 2023, looking to overcome the challenge of a spirited Delhi (DEL) in Chennai on May 10 and get closer to a play-offs spot. 

CHE returned to winning ways with a solid win over Mumbai and would now be hoping to secure two more points against DEL, who for the most part have struggled in the tournament. 

CHE defeated Mumbai in a low-scoring encounter last Saturday with the bowlers, Matheesha Pathirana in particular, doing a decent job to contain the opposition. The chase was wrapped up effortlessly with contributions from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway and Shivam Dube. 

While the top-order batters have been doing a good job, the middle order hasn’t flourished as much as they would have hoped for. Seasoned campaigner Ambati Rayudu (95 runs in 11 matches) and Ravindra Jadeja (92 runs in 11 matches) have looked scrappy in the middle. Skipper MS Dhoni has managed to play fiery cameos down the order whenever he has got in. 

The hosts will be hoping that the middle order is not exposed in a crunch tie. Fans will want the likes of Rayudu, Moeen Ali and Jadeja to rise to the occasion. The ferocious striker Shivam Dube has so far scored 290 runs from 9 innings and will be raring bigger contributions in crucial games. 

Tushar Deshpande with 19 wickets is the third-highest taker this season but his economy rate of 10.33 and leaking runs at key junctures has hurt CHE at times. The skipper would like him to be more productive with the ball. 

Jadeja has made timely strikes while baby Malinga will be eager to continue his golden run, like against MUM.

Pathirana will be one bowler DEL, including the explosive Phil Salt, who played a critical role in DEL’s last win, would be wary of. 

Skipper David Warner has not been at his destructive best and the batting unit which includes Mitchell Marsh and Rovman Powell among others has flattered to deceive. With the tournament progressing to the preliminary phase, it would be interesting to see if DEL can keep their campaign alive. They have won two games on the bounce and a win here will do their confidence a world of good. 

To stun CHE at home, which is easier said than done, DEL batters will need to be prepared for the spin challenge. Bowlers on the other hand will have the arduous task of keeping the CHE batters quiet. 

Veteran pacer, Ishant Sharma, who seems to have rediscovered his groove, would be one to keep a keen eye on for besides speedster Anrich Nortje, Marsh and the spin pair of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel.

CHE on paper is the stronger side today but DEL has shown promise in the last few games and we can witness a closely fought encounter. The yellow army however will have the home advantage and we all know how dangerous CHE is in their own backyard.

Phil Salt- Phil Salt is coming into this match on the back of a match-winning 87. He has looked good at the top of the order and will be eager to continue his merry ways. 

Mitchell Marsh- Marsh is the man for big occasions. He is a dangerous batter up the order, pretty effective with the ball in hand and is a fine outfielder.
