‘You're a harsh man, Sunny’ - Matthew Hayden responds to Gavaskar’s remark on Gill

Former Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar made a pricking statement on Shubman Gill during the third test of India versus Australia in the Border-Gavaskar trophy. The cricketing legend crossed swords with the emerging star during the third Test of the four-match series which is being played at the Holkar stadium in Indore.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Co. have started off a shaky inning having lost their side for just 109 runs. The most talked about point in the match while leading into this contest was the inclusion of Shubman Gill in the Playing XI after KL Rahul’s poor form in the first two Test matches.

While the seventh over of the innings, Gill got himself hurt as he got an injury due to a blow near the abdomen while going for a quick single. The opener took a little break before calling the physio. Although this act looks like a simple break for others, but it ticked off Gavaskar who was in the commentary box along with Mathew Hayden as he dug into the matter and shared passed on some harsh remarks on the incident regarding the batsman taking the break.

"We're seeing a little bit of repair work for Shubman Gill. He had dived to make his crease but I tell you what. This could have waited. This could have waited till the end of the over. There is a fast bowler who is bowling - he has bowled four deliveries; it's hot - and you've given him a breather. Yes, you are hurt but wait for two more deliveries. Wait for the over to finish and get treated. You're at the non-striker's end, you're not at the striker's end. Simple things can make a difference," Gavaskar said.

In response to Gavaskar’s statement, Matthew Hayden pinned the statements as “too harsh”.

"You're a harsh man, Sunny. That's a real stinger," Hayden replied.

"Yes, it is but listens you are playing for your country. Just two more deliveries. You're at the non-striker's. I can understand if you're taking a strike and you've got that discomfort. And he's done that after two deliveries,” Gavaskar remained still at his statement.

Gill managed to score 21 runs off 18 deliveries before Matthew Kuhnemann turned away and it was enough for an outside edge.
